Pongren village, located under Longmatra block in Kiphire district, experienced gusty winds likely due to the effects of Cyclone Remal in the Bay of Bengal.

Gusty winds devastate Pongren Village; Granary destroyed, crops lost
Between 11:30 AM and 12:00 PM, a granary was destroyed when a huge oak tree fell on the property due to heavy winds, destroying harvested crops, including 45 tina of millets and 58 tina of maize. The granary belonged to a humble farming family of eight whose livelihood depends on farming crops for daily survival.

The VDB secretary of the village reported that most of the crops were washed away by the heavy rain and wind, rendering them unusable or unrecoverable. The village community and like-minded individuals are trying their best to provide assistance in every little way possible. However, they request government intervention, as the affected family’s basic food stock reserved for the current year has been destroyed.

It is noteworthy that the Pongren village community reserves oak trees in and around its jurisdiction to protect properties from heavy winds, as the village is located on a hillside where strong winds are more likely to occur.

“Everyone in the village shares the pain of the affected family, and our community will help rebuild the granary for the unfortunate family as soon as possible,” added the VDB secretary of Pongren village. Meanwhile, they urge the government for immediate intervention in the matter.
