A park with hydroponics, poly houses, and drip irrigation
The Innovative Farmers Demo Park was inaugurated at Botsa, Kohima, by Minister for Women Resource Development and Horticulture, Salhoutuonuo Kruse, in the presence of Chief Minister Dr. Neiphiu Rio, village leaders from 12 villages, and other dignitaries.
Speaking at the inauguration, Kruse stated that the farm is expected to “contribute to income growth and diversified livelihoods,” while also promoting horti-tourism as a means of generating revenue. “By developing recreational opportunities for residents and visitors, this initiative will bring economic benefits and serve as a model for others,” she said.
She highlighted that the park would foster community engagement by allowing farmers to share experiences, discuss challenges, and learn about innovative farming techniques, research-driven practices, and sustainable methods.
Kruse also thanked and congratulated those involved in the project, stating, “This dream has become a reality through relentless efforts.” She encouraged farmers and experts to adopt responsible farming practices that “protect our soil, conserve water, and respect the delicate balance of nature.”
Delivering the welcome address, Secretary, Horticulture, Akumla Chuba, IAS, shared her optimism about the demo park’s role in knowledge-sharing between farmers and the department. “This park will provide a space where farmers can explore new ideas, technologies, and learn from one another,” she said. She further noted that the park features a hydroponic system, net and poly houses, orchards, drip irrigation, and organic farming methods, which will showcase best practices in horticulture.
Chuba expressed gratitude to the Chief Minister for approving the project under the State Innovation Program (2022-23) and making it a reality. She urged farmers to “take full advantage of the Demo Park, experiment with new techniques, and work together to bring horticultural innovations that improve livelihoods and create a more sustainable food system.”
In a brief report on the project, Director of Horticulture, Meyasashi, outlined the main objectives of the park, stating that it aims to:
· Showcase and demonstrate new and improved horticultural technologies, practices, and crop varieties.
· Provide training to farmers on new varieties, planting techniques, and sustainable farming methods.
· Develop the concept of Horti-Tourism to strengthen farmers’ economies.
· Enhance the quality of life for residents and visitors by offering recreational, social, and educational opportunities.
· Facilitate year-round vegetable production through initiatives like protected cultivation, hydroponic farming, and micro-green farming.
The Innovative Farmers Demo Park is expected to become a center for agricultural learning and economic development, enabling farmers to adopt modern horticultural techniques while preserving environmental sustainability.
