International Conference on Language, Literature, and Oral Tradition of the Ao-Nagas on 31 July

This one-day international conference will focus on the Language, Literature and Oral Tradition of the Ao-Nagas. It will provide a platform for scholars, researchers, educators, and practitioners who are interested to explore and deepen their understanding of the intricate interplay between language, literature, and oral tradition. This conference will also highlight the significance of language, literature, and oral tradition in preserving and transmitting cultural heritage across generations, particularly in the face of globalization and cultural homogenization. We hope that this conference will promote public awareness and appreciation of the richness and diversity of language, literature, and oral tradition. Presentations and paper submissions by participants can be done in both Ao Chungli and English languages.

The Ao Nagas are one of the major Naga ethnic groups residing primarily in the North-Eastern state of Nagaland in India. They are renowned for their rich cultural heritage, distinctive traditions, and vibrant community life. The language spoken by the Aos belongs to the Tibeto-Burman language family. Their culture is characterized by intricate rituals, vibrant festivals, and traditional folk songs and dances, which play a central role in community life. At present, Ao is being taught till the undergraduate level under Nagaland University.

Language, literature, and oral tradition are inseparable elements of human culture and communication, each influencing and enriching the other. This conference will delve into the intricate relationship between these components, examining how they shape and reflects the Ao society, identity, and tradition. Hence, we call papers in these research areas but not limited to:

. Dynamic nature of language.

. Linguistic structure of Ao.

. Literature as a reflection of societal values, beliefs, and aspirations.

. Literature in preserving and transmitting cultural heritage across generations.

. Explore the significance of oral tradition.

. Challenges and opportunities of preserving and documenting oral narratives.

. Interaction of languages, literatures, and oral traditions.

. Phenomenon of translation and its impact on literary works and oral narratives.

. Contribution of language, literature, and oral tradition to the construction of individual and collective identities.

. Representation and voice within literary and oral contexts.

. Role of technology in reshaping traditional storytelling methods and literary forms.

The conference will be in hybrid mode. It will consist keynote speech from scholars of international repute, panel discussions, and research paper presentation by scholars in linguistics, literature, and folklore and cultural studies. Participants will have the opportunity to engage in interdisciplinary dialogue, share research findings, and exchange ideas on the complex interplay of language, literature, and oral tradition. Presentations and paper submissions by participants can be done in both Ao-Chungli and English languages.

This seminar is designed for scholars, researchers, educators, students, and practitioners interested in the intersections of Ao language, literature, and oral tradition. It welcomes participants from diverse academic backgrounds and cultural contexts, fostering a collaborative environment for knowledge exchange and intellectual exploration.

By exploring the symbiotic relationship between language, literature, and oral tradition, this conference seeks to deepen our understanding of human communication, cultural expression, and the ways in which stories shape our shared experiences. Through interdisciplinary dialogue and collaboration, we aim to chart new pathways for research, teaching, and advocacy in these interconnected fields.

This conference is organised by Ao Riju in collaboration with the Language Translation Centre, Fazl Ali College, Mokokchung.

The Ao Riju (Ao Academy) is constituted to promote Ao Language and Literature; to contribute towards publication of books, articles, magazines and encourage creative writing in Ao Language; to generate books for academia; to document, do research on oral traditions and perpetuate the dynamism of Ao culture. The Mission Statement of Ao Academy is:

. To promote Ao Language and Literature

. To work towards codification of Ao Language

. To publish text books in Ao subject (MIL) for schools, undergraduate and post graduate courses and to pave the way to introduce the subject in educational institutions

. To conduct trainings/workshops, seminars from time to time

. To work in consultation with concerned government departments/organizations for promotion of literature

To aid in developing new curriculum for Ao subject/Revise old curriculum from time to time as directed by Nagaland Board of School Education and other concerned authorities

. Conduct examinations in Ao Language proficiency from time to time and offer certificates

. Conduct research programmes on related matters from time to time and publish books/journals, etc., for the benefit of the people

The Language Translation Centre, Fazl Ali College was established in 2021 as a joint effort of the English and Ao Departments, and is a registered society with its headquarters at Fazl Ali College. The Centre was founded with the motto: Retrieving Identities and the Vision to Promote Ao Language and Literature.

The objectives of the Centre include:

. To translate literary works in English to Ao and vice versa

. To do research on Ao oral literature and translate them into English

. To publish books on Ao Language and Literature

. To offer Certificate Courses in Language Translation in the near future
