The Department of History, Jubilee Memorial College, Mokokchung celebrated World Heritage day under the theme, “Heritage and Climate,” on Monday, April 18.

On the occasion, Padma Shri T. Senka Ao, former editor-in-chief of Ao Milen spoke on the importance of preserving heritage. “Heritage is not only about monuments and things holding materialistic value; it also includes customs and practices, language, natural formations and folklore,” he said, while citing the example of Aos being the “first to construct bamboo flooring during the olden days” was also a part of heritage.

 

“Our roots are our heritage,” he continued, and added that climate is also a part of heritage. “We belong to a specific location, a specific environment, and it becomes a part of our heritage,” he explained. The environment and climatic conditions of a particular location distinguish one tribe from another among the Nagas, he said.

 

In his closing remarks, he stated that while material legacy is important, our character, which he believes we are losing, is the best and most significant legacy.

 

Earlier, Dr. Imtiwati Jamir, Principal JMC, expressed his gratitude to T. Senka Ao for his contribution to society including 9 books which have been published in Ao and are being used in school curriculum.

 

As part of the event, the results for a Mobile Photography contest organized by the Department of History, JMC was announced during where 1st position was bagged by Bendangjungshi, 6th Semester, while the second and third positions were bagged by Temjenmenla and Imlikokba of second semester respectively.
