Reacting to the distressing video of two women being paraded naked by unknown armed miscreants earlier on 4 May, which went viral recently, the Superintendent of Manipur Police, K Megachandra Singh has assured the public that investigation has commenced and that the State Police is exerting all-out efforts to apprehend the culprits at the earliest.

He said that “a case of abduction, gang rape, murder etc.” has been registered at Nongpok Sekmai Police Station in Thoubal District against the “unknown armed miscreants.”

While the situation in the state has been relatively peaceful during the last 24 hours, the SP said that tensions linger in certain areas due to sporadic incidents of firing and gatherings of crowds in different places.

To address the security concerns, the State Police, in conjunction with Central forces, conducted search operations in various vulnerable and fringe areas across both valley and hill districts. During one such operation, according to the SP, District Police in Imphal East successfully recovered two arms and two magazines.

In light of the situation, curfew relaxation has been curtailed in five valley districts and Churachandpur, with stringent security measures being enforced to ensure compliance with the curfew. To maintain law and order, a total of 126 checkpoints have been installed in various districts of Manipur, both in the hills and the valley. The Police have also detained 452 individuals in connection with violations reported from different parts of the state.

Singh appealed to the general public, urging them to play a role in restoring normalcy in the state. He encouraged citizens to clarify any rumor by dialing “rumor free” number 9233522822 of the Central Control room, and to return and deposit arms, ammunition and explosives to the police or security forces immediately.
