The Mokokchung Chamber of Commerce and Industry (MCCI) on Thursday extended financial assistance to victims of the April 21 fire accident in Dilong Ward, Mokokchung, near the MMC Complex. The beneficiaries included eight traders whose shops were completely destroyed and four others whose business establishments were partially damaged.
The establishments completely destroyed included four paan shops, an electronics repair centre, a theological library, an NGO office, and a restaurant. Those partially damaged included two eateries, a readymade garment store, and a bakery.
Speaking to the beneficiaries, MCCI president Tsukti Longkumer expressed regret over the accident and encouraged them not to lose heart, but to work harder than before. He said unforeseen accidents can happen and are often beyond one’s control, but how one overcomes misfortune is within one’s control. He urged the beneficiaries to move forward with a positive attitude.
He said MCCI exists first and foremost for the welfare and interests of the business community and called for unity among members. He also cited various welfare activities undertaken by MCCI for its members during emergencies and unforeseen situations, including natural calamities, and said MCCI stands its ground whenever its interests are infringed upon from any quarter.
Mokokchung ‘most business-friendly town’ in Nagaland
The MCCI president said Mokokchung is the most business-friendly town in Nagaland today. He attributed this to MCCI’s stand against all forms of extortion in the town. He also stated that, unlike most other towns, MCCI does not allow various Naga political groups to collect “tax” from the business community.
Expressing gratitude to members of the business community, he announced that the MCCI building under construction in Arkong Ward, opposite HDFC Bank, would be completed soon. He said the land purchase and construction were fully funded through members’ contributions, adding that MCCI would become the first district chamber of commerce and industry in Nagaland to build its own office-cum-commercial building.
