Sunepienla Longkumer, the Nationalist Democratic Progressive Party (NDPP) candidate from Sungkomen Ward for the Mokokchung Municipal Council (MMC) election 2024, officially declared her candidacy at her residence during a declaration program held on June 15.

Addressing the gathering, Sunepienla highlighted her involvement in various social organizations, which has provided her with the opportunity to meet many people and gain significant knowledge of local issues. She emphasized the need for development and expressed hope that “if we have this vision, we can work hand in hand to bring better development to society.”
Acknowledging the rapid changes of the 21st century, she spoke about the capability of the youth to bring societal change through their knowledge and vision. She urged people to consider new perspectives moving forward. Sunepienla also discussed the importance of technological intervention in daily life and expressed her strong belief in the necessity of youth involvement in the municipal council to provide innovative ideas and policies. She stressed that the governance systems are evolving and that youth are essential in the current system, expressing her desire for their perspectives and voices to be heard in local decision-making bodies.
Longkumer stated how the Sungkomen Ward is blessed, yet mentioned the burdens that come along with it. She also outlined her objectives which included improving waste management and sanitation, which she aims to achieve in collaboration with non-governmental and governmental agencies by implementing waste management policies. She aims to enhance sports facilities by creating opportunities for young athletes and focuses on self-employment, pledging to facilitate opportunities for unemployed youth and school dropouts.
She stated that upgrades are needed in every aspect of society and further requested elders to give opportunities to the youth in decision-making and voicing their opinions.
Emphasizing the power of the vote in bringing change to society, she appealed to the gathering to vote for her in order to finish the work they have started. “Where there is unity there is victory,” she said. She further affirmed her cooperation with the people in advancing the ward.
The 29-year old holds a Bachelors degree from St Joseph College, Jakhama and an array of experience in social entrepreneurship. She is also currently serving as the general secretary of the NDPP Youth Organization, Sungkomen Unit. She will be facing Independent candidate N Imtimenla Ao in a straight contest from Sungkomen Ward which is one of the 6 wards under MMC reserved for women.
