The Mokokchung Municipal Council (MMC) has launched a mass sensitisation campaign across all 18 wards under its jurisdiction to create awareness on scientific waste management and the implementation of the Solid Waste Management Rules, 2026.

The campaign, launched on June 8, will continue until June 17 and is being conducted under the directives of the Urban Development Department, Government of Nagaland, under the Swachh Bharat Mission (Urban).

According to MMC, the programme aims to educate residents on the provisions of the Solid Waste Management Rules, 2026, as well as directives issued by the Supreme Court regarding scientific waste management and environmental protection. A key focus of the campaign is the mandatory segregation of waste into four streams at the household, institutional and commercial levels.

Held under the theme, “A Global Call for Climate Action,” the campaign seeks to promote responsible waste management practices, encourage community participation and foster behavioural change towards a cleaner urban environment.

Resource persons for the campaign include Dr. Temjensangla Pongener, Associate Professor at Fazl Ali College and member of Earth Alliance Mokokchung, Sungtiyala, proprietor of Green Heap, and Kilepchiba, Sanitation Inspector, MMC.

MMC stated that the initiative is aimed at strengthening public awareness and participation in waste management while advancing the objectives of the Swachh Bharat Mission (Urban).
