Valentine’s Day may have begun as a raucous celebration filled with debauchery, blood, and sacrifice, but it was the Romantic English poets Geoffrey Chaucer and William Shakespeare who helped Valentine’s Day eventually transform into a day about romantic love.

Love is something that transcends age, gender, and social status and can be expressed in a variety of ways. But it’s all roses and chocolate in Mokokchung this Valentine’s Day!

“Bouquets and fresh red roses are now almost out of stock for me which shows the demand is huge,” Washilemla, the owner of Tia’s Cottage Store said, adding, “I am afraid that some late orders might not get the fresh red roses.”

“It’s so exciting because I’ve been getting advance bookings for this day since the first week of February,” she said.

According to her, her customers this year include students, teenagers, married couples, and those in long-distance relationships.

“I observed that this time friends are even giving each other flowers and hampers,” she said, adding, “Those past days, usually we made hampers only for ‘for her’ but this time we made it ‘for him’ and it actually sells well,” she added.

“Because my hamper starts at 350 rupees, I noticed that students and teenagers bought a lot. Most of the customers I had were between the ages of 25-35 and 40-45,” she explained.
Chubalemla, one of the founders of gift_fairy_ci, responded similarly.

“For us, the preparation for the day began as early as February 3 and 4. When we had married couples and newly married couples buying each other gifts, it was such a joyful experience. This time, we even had a lot of deliveries for long-distance couples,” Chuba explained.

“It’s such a lovely feeling to see people expressing their love with flowers and chocolates. We made strawberry chocolate dip, bouquets, and roses this time,” Chuba added.

Meanwhile, Yashirenla, the owner of velvet_clg, stated that she received a large number of orders at the last minute.

“I am out of station at the moment, but I did receive quite a number of orders in Mokokchung. Red roses and chocolates are definitely a thing,” Yashiren said, adding that bouquets and chocolates are what really sells most.

Speaking of the type of customers she had, she said she had mixed customers including both young and old and both male and female.

One may or may not celebrate Valentine’s Day, but it is a day to cherish love—young love and old love—and Mokokchung is filled with love today.
