Mon District Launches Tobacco Free Youth Campaign 2.0

Deputy Commissioner Ajit Kumar Verma, IAS, officially inaugurated the Tobacco Free Youth Campaign 2.0 at Holy Cross School, Mon. Organized by the District Tobacco Control Cell, the initiative is part of the Ministry of Health & Family Welfare’s efforts to curb tobacco use among the youth.

Addressing the gathering during the launch, DC Ajit Kumar Verma expressed gratitude to the District Tobacco Control Cell for their proactive stance in implementing the campaign. Emphasizing the vulnerability of youth to tobacco use, he underscored the government’s commitment to safeguarding young people’s health.

“Tobacco, drugs, and alcohol consumption are societal evils, posing significant health risks due to the chemicals they contain,” remarked DC Ajit Kumar Verma. He highlighted the pivotal role of educational institutions in shaping individuals and society, noting teachers as influential role models due to their substantial time spent with students. “Your decisions today will shape your future in the next 10-20 years. Choose wisely and contribute positively to society,” challenged DC Ajit Kumar Verma, urging students to stay away from harmful activities and strive for personal development.

Dr. Esther Chophy, District Nodal Officer, NTCP Mon, outlined the objectives of the Tobacco Free Youth Campaign 2.0, stressing its importance in promoting a tobacco-free environment among the youth. The welcome address was delivered by Sabu James, Headmaster of Holy Cross School, Mon, and the pledge for the campaign was led by Dr. Lihngam Konyak, Jr. Dental Surgeon, DH Mon. The event was chaired by E. Nyeamying Konyak, Consultant, NTCP Mon.

The launch of Tobacco Free Youth Campaign 2.0 aims to instill awareness and commitment among Mon district’s youth towards leading a tobacco-free lifestyle, contributing to their overall well-being and future prospects.
