Chief Minister Rio on 14 April, formally launched the Nagaland Solar Mission, aimed at installing residential Rooftop Solar (RTS) systems, in convergence with the Prime Minister’s Surya Ghar: Muft Bijli Yojana (PMSG:MBY). The launch event took place at the Chief Minister’s Office in the Nagaland Civil Secretariat, Kohima, in the presence of Minister of Power and Parliamentary Affairs, KG Kenye, along with senior government officials.

Rio stated that the Nagaland Government has taken a major step to address the power deficits faced across the state by launching this solar mission. He emphasized that to further support the green energy revolution, the state government has decided to offer an additional subsidy of up to Rs 50,000 for installations of up to 3 kW, provided through budgetary support. He added that this additional state support will play a significant role in helping meet the Government of India’s target under PMSG:MBY to install 1 crore Rooftop Solar (RTS) systems on a mission mode by 2026-27.

Rio also explained that the combined subsidies from the state and central governments will cover most of the cost of installing solar power for households.

Beyond the installation, he noted, the power produced and supplied to the grid would help households reduce their electricity bills. He urged the citizens of Nagaland to take advantage of this opportunity and benefit from the transition to sustainable solar power production.

Minister KG Kenye, delivering a brief address, highlighted that with the additional state subsidy, rooftop solar installation would be more affordable, and he anticipated a positive response from the public to contribute to Nagaland’s green energy revolution. He expressed confidence that this initiative would significantly mitigate the state’s chronic power shortages and drive the socio-economic development necessary for the citizens of Nagaland.

The department also informed that, according to the latest data, 247 applications have already been received online to avail of the scheme. To ensure smooth installation, 55 national and state vendors are available in the state.
