Nagaland has received a significant boost under the Pradhan Mantri Matsya Sampada Yojana (PMMSY), with fisheries development projects worth Rs 165.38 crore approved for the state so far.

The central government has sanctioned Rs 106.96 crore as its share, of which Rs 73.32 crore has already been released to the state.

These funds are part of the nationwide fisheries development drive spearheaded by the Ministry of Fisheries, Animal Husbandry and Dairying, which has so far approved projects worth Rs 21,274.16 crore across India under PMMSY. The central share amounts to Rs 9,189.79 crore, with Rs 5,587.57 crore already disbursed to states and Union Territories.

In Nagaland, the investments are expected to create an estimated 52,996 direct and indirect employment opportunities across the fisheries and allied sectors, including aquaculture, processing, transportation, pond development, and marketing.

The scheme is being implemented through a combination of central and state funding, based on proposals submitted by respective governments and implementing agencies.

Nationwide, the PMMSY has generated an estimated 46.86 lakh jobs, underlining its role in strengthening India’s fisheries ecosystem and enhancing livelihood security. Some of the top beneficiaries include Andhra Pradesh, Kerala, Maharashtra, Chhattisgarh, and Odisha, which have received large shares of the central fund and posted high employment generation figures.
