Nagaland’s first Bioplastic Manufacturing Unit inaugurated in Changtongya, Mokokchung

Changtonya, 20 April (MTNews): A significant milestone was achieved in Changtongya town today, about 40 kms from Mokokchung town, with the inauguration of the Ecostarch Bioplastic Manufacturing Unit, a first in Nagaland. The unit boasts an initial capacity of about 3 tons, with plans to ramp up production to 8–10 tons within the next 3–5 months to meet the demand not only in the state but also in the adjoining Northeastern states. Dr Akumtoshi Longkumer, the promoter of Ecostarch, shared this ambitious vision during the inauguration ceremony.

The event was graced by Dr Arun Kumar Sarma, Director General of the North East Centre for Technology Application and Reach (NECTAR), as chief guest. Bioplastic manufacturing represents the next-generation solution for producing affordable, durable, and eco-friendly plastic products, surpassing the environmental concerns associated with traditional petrochemical-based plastics.

Dr Longkumer underscored the plant’s primary objective of utilizing local resources to develop bioplastic, aligning with sustainable practices and promoting economic growth within the region. The project was supported by NECTAR, an autonomous society established under the Department of Science & Technology, Government of India, headquartered in Shillong, Meghalaya.

Congratulating Ecostarch on its pioneering initiative, Dr Sarma highlighted the significance of the manufacturing unit as the first of its kind in the Northeast. He emphasized the importance of technological advancements in utilizing the state’s abundant natural resources effectively. Dr Sarma stressed the need for community involvement and ownership in driving sustainable development initiatives.

The Director General highlighted the various schemes initiated by NECTAR in the Northeast and urged the youths in the region to take advantage of the scheme, assuring that NECTAR will extend all possible help in establishing units and plants through the available raw materials in the region.

Sarma also informed that a number of initiatives will be undertaken for the region like banana fiber extraction, areca nut plate making, pineapple canning and tea, adding that there is huge potential from this area. He expressed hope about bringing investors in these sectors, saying that the region have tremendous resources and huge potential. Sarma said, community development, job opportunity for the local populace will be some of the major factors if these huge potentials are tapped.

Speaking on NECTAR’s mission, Dr Sarma reiterated the organization’s commitment to disseminating technologies and empowering society through innovation. He emphasized the potential for technological innovation to drive economic growth and prosperity, citing Nagaland’s rich resources such as banana, pineapple, cardamom, turmeric, and spring water from its rivers.

As a special guest at the ceremony, Tsukti Longkumer, President of the Mokokchung Chamber of Commerce & Industry (MCCI) and Chairman of the Mokokchung Entrepreneurs Consortium (MEC), commended Ecostarch for its groundbreaking endeavor. He highlighted the challenges faced in establishing such a manufacturing unit and underscored its potential to generate employment opportunities and foster community development.

Longkumer called for support for local products and emphasized the importance of mutual assistance and market integrity in realizing the full potential of initiatives like Ecostarch.

The inauguration program was chaired by Dr Jongpongrenla Jamir. The event commenced with an opening prayer led by R Wati Jamir, pastor, NCRC Changtongya Yimsen, followed by a welcome speech from Dr Akumtoshi Longkumer, the promoter of Ecostarch.

Representatives from various village councils, including Longeryangba, Changtongya Yimsen village council, followed by Changtongya village council, Nungsangtuba, Yaongyimsen village council, and K Mayang, Akhoya village council. They shared their thoughts on this milestone, emphasizing community growth and local empowerment.
