Participants of the National Voluntary Blood Donors Day celebrated at the Imkongliba Memorial District Hospital (IMDH), Mokokchung on October 1

The National Voluntary Blood Donors Day was celebrated at the Imkongliba Memorial District Hospital (IMDH) Mokokchung on October 1, organized by the Mokokchung District Blood Donors Association (MVBDA) in collaboration with the 12 Assam Rifles. The event was held under the theme “Share Life, Give Blood” and “20 Years of Celebrating Giving: Thank You Blood Donors”

The program began with an invocation prayer by Jungshi Aier, followed by an address from Molo Jamir, President of the MVBDA. In his speech, Jamir highlighted the significance of the day, explaining that the National Voluntary Blood Donation Day is observed across India on October 1. The event was first held in 1975, with the aim of raising awareness about voluntary blood donation and meeting the blood needs of patients through donations. Jamir also discussed the importance of maintaining adequate blood stocks in blood banks.

The MVBDA president also outlined some of the criteria for blood donation, which include being between 18-60 years of age, weighing more than 45 kgs, having a pulse rate of 60-100, and maintaining normal blood pressure. He noted that in Mokokchung, around 100 units of blood are required monthly but only 30-40 units are typically donated. He encouraged people to donate regularly, not just for friends and family but for anyone in need. He added that those who are unable to donate due to health reasons can still support the cause by encouraging others to donate.

The Guest of Honour, Lanuakum, Deputy Chairman of the Mokokchung Municipal Council (MMC), also addressed the gathering. In his speech, he emphasized the importance of blood, describing it as a vital connective tissue essential for health and survival. He pointed out that the lifespan of blood stored in blood banks is only 120 days, making regular donations necessary to replenish the supply. He urged the association, the medical fraternity, and social organizations to use various forms of media to raise awareness about the importance of blood donation.

The event concluded with a vote of thanks by Makshi Jamir, DPO (DAPCU), who expressed gratitude to all those present. A special card will be provided to each donor, tracking their donations.

The benediction was pronounced by Chaplain Wapang, IMDH which was followed by a voluntary blood donation camp.
