The Nagaland unit of the National People’s Party (NPP) has raised serious concern over a potential influx of illegal immigrants into Nagaland following the recent eviction drives carried out by the Assam government. In a representation submitted to the state Home Minister, the party called for immediate and coordinated action to prevent what it described as a grave threat to Nagaland’s demographic balance and cultural identity.
The NPP warned that the porous border between Nagaland and Assam—particularly in vulnerable districts and towns—could be exploited if robust preventive measures are not urgently put in place. It pointed to inadequate surveillance mechanisms and weak verification systems that may allow undocumented individuals to slip through undetected.
“There is a clear and present danger of demographic imbalance if the situation is left unchecked,” the party said.
To address this, the NPP has proposed the deployment of dedicated patrol units for 24/7 surveillance at critical border routes and entry points. It also stressed the importance of community vigilance, recommending the active involvement of village councils, colony authorities, and local committees to monitor and report suspicious movement.
Among its key administrative recommendations, the party called for the formation of a Special Task Force (STF) under the Home Department to coordinate all anti-infiltration operations. It also pushed for the strengthening and digitisation of the Inner Line Permit (ILP) system to improve real-time monitoring and tracking of migrants.
To deter illegal employment and sheltering of undocumented persons, the NPP suggested strict penalties for individuals or organisations found violating ILP or related regulations.
The party also emphasized the role of technology in modern border management, proposing the use of drones, real-time surveillance systems, and the creation of a state-level digital database to accurately track and verify migrant entries.
The NPP, in light of this situation, has urged the state government to convene an urgent review meeting with law enforcement and border district officials. It further called for clear directives to all districts to intensify identity verification efforts at every entry point.
