Kohima, 11 October (MTNews): Liangmai FC of Peren emerged victorious over defending champions and pre-tournament favorites New Market FC, defeating them 1-0 in the first semifinal match of the 23rd NSF Martyrs Memorial Trophy 2023 at the IG Stadium in Kohima on Wednesday.

Without their key players, striker Rhitsho Mero and midfielder Aloumai, New Market FC struggled to take the lead and maintain control of the match. Both teams had numerous opportunities, but it was a solitary goal from Lamsanggin Hangsing that made all the difference.

In the first half, New Market squandered multiple chances and must shoulder the blame for their inability to capitalize on scoring opportunities. The closest New Market came to a goal was in the 35th minute when Awangbe struck the crossbar. Furthermore, Thejasetuo Gwirie missed a golden opportunity when he found himself one-on-one with the keeper but failed to find the target in the 38th minute. While Liangmai FC struggled to make a significant impact in the game in the first half.

Liangmai FC exhibited a stronger performance in the second half, with Lamsanggin Hangsing heading home the winning goal in the 87th minute to seal the game. For his outstanding performance, Lamsanggin Hangsing was awarded the Man of the Match, presented by Kezhaleo Rülho, a first-class contractor and the match patron for the first semifinal.

The second semifinal match will be played on Thursday between United FC Piphema and Red Scars FC, at 5:00 pm.
