Just a month after its official inauguration on April 22, the Medziphema Football Academy is showing encouraging signs of progress in grassroots football development. The academy currently has 75 enrolled students — including 8 girls. Launched with the goal of nurturing young football talent in the state, the academy has attracted students from Mokokchung, Peren, Dimapur, and Kohima.

Some of the young players are staying in the hostel facility provided by the academy, allowing for a structured and disciplined training environment.

Catering to students aged 7 to 18, the academy has divided its training routine into two categories — Under-14 and Under-18 — with each group alternating training sessions during the weekdays. In addition, the Under-18 group receives strength and conditioning training through a partnership with Alpha Iron Gym, further enhancing their physical development.

Located in Medziphema — often affectionately called “Little Brazil” for its deep-rooted passion for football — the academy is living up to the town’s nickname by nurturing future football talent with focused, professional training.

Thangboi Thomsong, MFA Administrator, speaking to Mokokchung Times, said, “Our focus remains on building a solid foundation in football. We want the students to learn the game with the right fundamentals and also enjoy it.”

“Even in this short span, we’re witnessing noticeable improvement in both their technical skills and discipline,” he added.

The administrator said the academy’s vision goes beyond just weekly training sessions. Plans are already in motion to send select players for trials at Rangdajied United FC for the upcoming Shillong League — a step toward giving the players broader exposure and competitive experience outside the state.

Looking ahead, he informed that the academy aspires to participate in All India Football Federation (AIFF) age-group tournaments in the future. “We have our goals, but we are still in our early phase. With the support of well-wishers, the Nagaland Football Association, and District Football Associations, we’re hopeful we can gradually reach those levels,” the administrator said.
