Kohima, August 6 (MTNews): The Department of School Education has stated today that it is seriously examining the concerns expressed by the Phek Town Youth Society (PTYS) in regards to functioning of GHSS Phek and that all issues raised by the PTYS will be addressed in conformity with the Department’s norms.
The Phek Town Youth Society (PTYS) had on Thursday sealed Government Higher Secondary School (GHSS) Phek indefinitely following the state government’s alleged failure to fulfil its demand to fill the vacant posts in the school.

 

PTYS had alleged that 16 teaching staff were transferred, retired or died, and that the government had failed to send relievers. It added that the post for Geography was not extended and the Botany teacher was absent from duty for many years. Another two teachers were going to be transferred out, totalling up to 20 teachers, it added.

 

In this regard, Principal Director of DoSE, Thavaseelan K in a press release said that the new Principal posted to GHSS Phek has already assumed charge on 4th August 2022 and that a Vice Principal was heading the School until the Principal took over. Further, he said the Department has posted a Post Graduate Teacher (Tenyidie) to GHSS, Phek. He informed that, at present, GHSS Phek has a total enrolment of 585 students from Classes 7 to 12. There are 23 Post Graduate Teachers (2 Geography, 2 Political Science, 2 Education, 1 Economics, 2 History, 1 Hindi, 4 English, 2 Chemistry, 1 Physics, 1 Botany, 1 Zoology, 2 Maths & 2 Computer Science) and 8 Graduate Teachers (2 Social Science, 1 English, 3 Science, 1 Maths, 1 Hindi).

 

The Principal Director also said that Science Stream is being offered at GHSS Peren, GHSS Longleng and GHSS Kiphire from the current academic year. To activate the Science Stream in these 3 districts and meet the demand of the students, 1 PGT each in Chemistry and Maths have been transferred from GHSS Phek and posted to GHSS Peren and GHSS Kiphire respectively. After the recent transfer and posting, the School will have 22 PGTs and 8 GTs totaling 30 teachers in all. There is sufficient number of teachers to run the school smoothly, he added.

 

“Further, the Department vide a Notification has reiterated that all PGTs are to teach Classes 9 and 10 in the relevant or general subjects as per the Nagaland School Education Service Rules 2017,” the press release said.

 

The Principal director also said that, at present, the Department has a shortage of PGTs which is being addressed. “The Department has recently placed requisition for 116 posts of PGTs with the Nagaland Public Service Commission (NPSC) to meet the needs of newly upgraded GHSSs,” it was informed.
