Chumoukedima, June 29 (MTNews): Nagaland Chief Minister Neiphiu Rio inaugurated Chumoukedima, the 15th district of Nagaland, on Wednesday. Speaking at the inauguration held at the DC Office Complex, Rio said that Chumoukedima district can prove to become a commercial hub and an engine for growth in the state. He also named the district the Land of Opportunity.
Citing that Chumoukedima is fortunate to have well established central institutions, universities and good connectivity, Rio said the district has a huge potential of becoming an intellectual hub and economically viable district. Describing Chumoukedima as a mini Nagaland, the Chief Minister expressed hope that there will be unity among the Naga tribes and strive to progress together. Rio also asserted that his government has been steadfast in its efforts and committed to all round development of each and every area of the state.
Rio also said that for the expansion of the district headquarter, Chumoukedima villagers and neighboring villages should cooperate in giving or selling their lands to the government for further development. The Chief Minister also informed that the state government decided that one Commissioner of Police will look after the three districts of Dimapur, Niuland and Chumoukedima.
On the confusion regarding the function of the rural and urban local bodies, Rio said one cannot impose the tradition of the village in the town adding that under the 94th Amendment of Municipal and Panchayati Raj, Nagaland is not exempted for conducting election, women reservation and taxation. He, therefore, said that village functionaries should understand and follow the system once the area comes under the Municipal and Town Council.
Advisor for Sericulture, Excise and Minority Affairs, Zhaleo Rio; Jacob Zhimomi, Minister of Public Health and Engineering Department (PHED); and MLA Azheto Zhimomi also spoke at the inauguration.
