The Rongmei Naga Council Manipur (RNCM) has voiced strong objections to the proposed oil and gas exploration in the Zeilad Wildlife Sanctuary, located in Tamenglong district, Manipur. This region is known for its rich biodiversity, including a variety of wildlife such as tigers, leopards, gibbons, hornbills, and pythons. The sanctuary is also home to Zeilad Lake, the largest lake in the area, providing a habitat for numerous species.

It may be noted that the Union Environment Ministry panel has granted initial approval for Stage-1 clearance of the project. The RNCM has called for individuals and groups to refrain from supporting the initiative, warning that backing the project would be deemed an act of treason.

The council argued that the exploration plan infringes upon the rights of tribal communities, citing Article 371 (C) of the Indian Constitution, which provides special protections for indigenous tribal hill dwellers in Manipur. The RNCM have urged the public and stakeholders to unite in their opposition to the project, expressing concerns that it would threaten their rights and territorial integrity.

Environmentalists and indigenous communities have also raised alarms about the potential detrimental impacts of the oil and gas exploration on the region’s biodiversity.
