The declaration of the UPSC CSE 2022 results on Tuesday afternoon was anxiously awaited by thousands of the country’s brightest youngsters, for whom getting into the civil services, and especially the IAS, is the ultimate ambition. Lakhs of young individuals apply for the UPSC CSE every year out of which a few hundred candidates are selected. A total of 5,73,735 candidates actually appeared in the examination in 2022, the results of which have just been declared, of which 13,090 candidates qualified for the Written (Main) Examination which was held in September, 2022. A total of 2,529 candidates qualified for the Personality Test of the examination. Finally, a total of 933 candidates were recommended by the Commission for appointment to various Services.

It is indeed uplifting that four candidates from Nagaland successfully cleared the UPSC CSE, including three from Mokokchung diaspora. It is, however, a different matter altogether as to why candidates from Mokokchung seldom crack the UPSC. Every deserving successful accomplishment is worthy of appreciation and recognition and those who successfully cleared the UPSC are to be respected. In fact, it is not for nothing that clearing the UPSC exam, a national competitive examination for recruitment to higher Civil Services of the Government of India, including the IAS, IFS and IPS, continues to be the topmost career choice for the Indian youth.

Clearing the UPSC examination and joining the civil services is considered a prestigious achievement in Indian society. It offers the successful candidates social recognition, respect, and a high status in the community. The allure of being part of the administrative machinery of the country contributes to the hype surrounding the exam. Civil service positions provide a stable and secure career path. Civil servants also hold positions of influence and power, as they play a crucial role in shaping and implementing government policies.

Besides, the ability to make a meaningful impact on society and contribute to the welfare of the nation motivates many aspirants to strive for success in the UPSC examination. The civil services offer individuals an opportunity to serve the country and contribute to the betterment of society. Many aspirants are driven by a sense of purpose, a desire to bring about positive change, and a commitment to public service. The prospect of being able to address social issues and make a difference in people’s lives adds to the appeal of the UPSC examination. Also, along with the social and personal gratification, civil servants receive attractive financial benefits. They enjoy a decent salary package, allowances, and various perks that make the profession financially rewarding.

All of the above and more have contributed to the hype over the UPSC examination which on its own serves as a motivational factor for aspirants. The proliferation of the coaching industry as a spin-off to this craze speaks volumes about just how the aura around the IAS, IFS and IPS keep growing year after year.
