Mokokchung has long been a land of immense potential, where raw talent and dedication have flourished against the odds. Yet, in the world of sports, potential alone is no longer enough. The world has moved on since the time of Dr. T. Ao, when sheer willpower and effort could propel an athlete onto the national stage. Today, success in sports is built on a foundation of structured training, scientific coaching, mental conditioning, proper infrastructure, and media exposure. In this context, the absence of a sports academy in Mokokchung is a serious roadblock to nurturing athletes who can compete at the highest levels.

The establishment of a multi-disciplinary sports academy in Mokokchung is not just desirable – it is necessary. Such an institution would not only serve as a hub for grooming young talent but also as a symbol of aspiration for the entire district and the region. However, the reality is sobering. Neither private investors nor government initiatives have shown serious intent to bring such a facility to this part of the state. Private entities are hesitant to invest in remote areas like Mokokchung, and when it comes to public infrastructure, Kohima and (undivided) Dimapur invariably take precedence.

In light of these limitations, we must act pragmatically. The Mokokchung District Sports Council, along with the various sports associations in the district, should work together to identify promising athletes and create mechanisms to send them to established academies in Kohima, Dimapur, or even outside the state. These young talents deserve access to professional training and guidance, which only well-equipped institutions can provide.

A future Olympic medalist from Mokokchung, for example, could well be the catalyst that brings a sports academy to our doorstep. But until then, we must invest in our athletes by helping them go and train where opportunity awaits. Nurturing talent beyond the local horizon may just be the path that eventually brings the world-class infrastructure we dream of back home.
