Mokokchung, 21 January (MTNews): Two lives were tragically cut short in a tragic accident near the 7th mile petrol pump, NH-29 on 20 January 2024. Around 9:30 PM, a speeding Alto car bearing registration number ASOIDN 0904 rammed into a stationary truck (ASOIDD 0958) parked on the roadside. The impact was devastating, claiming the lives of both occupants in the Alto.

According to police, the deceased driver was identified as Lt. Tovika (31 years old), son of Kasheto, resident of Unity Village, Hino 01 Block-V, Chumukedima. His co-occupant, Lt. Erang Konyak (38 years old), daughter of T. Akhai Konyak, resident of Block-7 Chumoukedima, hailed from Tobu Town, Mon district.

Upon receiving information about the accident, the duty officer along with the duty party rushed to the spot. The investigation revealed that the Alto car, traveling towards 5th mile, lost control and collided with the parked truck. The co-occupant died on the spot and the driver was shifted to CIHSR hospital before the duty party reached the spot. Accordingly, the police duty party rushed to the hospital to visit the injured driver where the doctor declared he succumbed to his injuries.

“After completing all legal necessary formalities, inquest of both the deceased was taken in the presence of available witnesses and on refusal for conduct of post mortem examinations, handing-taking of dead bodies was recorded and the deceased were handed over to their family members for the last rite,” police said in a statement. Both vehicles involved in the accident have been brought to the traffic control point for safe custody.

“Preliminary investigation and analysis of the CCTV surveillance footage of the unfortunate vehicular collision indicates the speeding Alto car ramming into the stationary parked truck by the road side resulting in the loss of two lives as mentioned above,” the police statement read.
