Mokokchung, 7 May (MTNews): As the world celebrated World Athletics Day on Sunday, Abu Metha, Associate Vice President of Athletics Federation of India said athletics is the blue-ribbon of the Olympic Games. It is the foundation of all physical sports, according to him.
Taking to Twitter, Metha said, “Every sportsperson needs to master the skills of walking, running, jumping and throwing in order to excel in other sports disciplines… Athletics exemplifies human activity and athletics represents sport at its most pure.”

World Athletics Day is observed on 7 May every year to promote sports and exercise for physical and mental well-being. Established by the International Amateur Athletic Federation (IAAF) in 1996, this day aims to raise awareness about the benefits of physical activity.
The theme for World Athletics Day 2023 is “Athletics for All – A New Beginning.”
Youth Affairs and Sports Minister Anurag Singh Thakur on Sunday said, Neeraj Chopra’s Diamond League win in Doha and three more athletes breaking National Records in the last 24 hours at the Athletics Track Festival in Los Angeles is a great way to celebrate World Athletics Day today.
The Minister said it has been a stellar week for India in Athletics.
