There are three former champions among the last four remaining teams in the ongoing 5th Mokokchung Inter Ward Football Tournament 2024. Arkong Ward secured a semifinal berth alongside Artang Ward and Mongsenbai Ward by defeating Alempang Ward in their quarterfinal encounter today. Sungkomen Ward, which emerged victorious over Tongdentsuyong Ward in the fourth quarterfinal match today, stands as the only team without a championship title in the last four.
Aripong provided an early lead for Arkong by scoring the first goal in the 11th minute of the third quarterfinal match against Alempang. Tajungsang and Bendangtoshi added to Arkong’s lead with goals in the 28th and 35th minutes, respectively, resulting in a halftime score of 3-0 in favor of the former champions. Noklensunep secured a brace in the 65th and 70th minutes, sealing a comfortable 5-0 victory for Arkong. Talitemsu of Arkong and Temjenrenba of Alempang were booked for foul play.
In the fourth and final quarterfinal match, Sungkomen defeated neighbors Tongdentsuyong with a margin of 2-1 goals, keeping their hopes alive for their maiden silverware. Tangmong scored for Sungkomen in the 31st minute, while the tournament’s leading goal scorer, Tarepnungsang, added the second goal after the break in the 51st minute. Opanglemzung netted a goal for Tongdentsuyong in the 70th minute, but it was too little, too late as the match ended with a score of 2-1 in favor of Sungkomen Ward. It is worth mentioning that the matches were played with 70-minute regulation time, divided into 35 minutes per half.
With the defending champions Sangtemla Ward now out of the equation, it appears that one of the former champions – Arkong, Artang, or Mongsenbai – will lift the trophy for a second time. However, this is contingent upon Sungkomen Ward, who are seeking their maiden trophy, not impeding their path to victory.
