The election appears to be getting closer and closer amid numerous voices and opinions, and political parties are all revving up their preparations. Here is the state’s political pulse:
- The Naga civil society organizations have been demanding solution to the vexed Naga Political Issue before the conduct of the state election while the Eastern Nagaland Peoples’ Organization (ENPO) have declared not to participate in the election process unless their demand for a separate state composed of the six eastern districts are fulfilled.
- The Election Commission of India (ECI) on Saturday said it would “deliver election” in Nagaland as per the constitutional mandate. The ECI said that the calls for boycott do not affect the political process. Chief Election Commissioner Rajiv Kumar said, “We will deliver the elections despite whatever calls there are and it doesn’t affect the political process.”
- According to ANI, the schedule for the assembly election in three northeastern states – Tripura, Nagaland and Meghalaya – is likely to be announced by January 19 by the Election Commission in Delhi.
- Today, BJP state election presidents of Karnataka, Tripura, Nagaland and Meghalaya presented their reports during the BJP National Executive meeting. In the meeting, BJP set a goal to win all elections in 2023.
- After the recent meeting between Nagaland Chief Minister Neiphiu Rio and Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma in Guwahati, reports about the finalization on the seat sharing formula of NDPP and the BJP for the upcoming Nagaland assembly election are doing the rounds.
- According to Assam’s CM Himanta Biswas Sarma, a final agreement on seat sharing between BJP and NDPP in Nagaland would be finalized in New Delhi on January 18-19 when NDPP and the BJP leaders meet in New Delhi. In 2018, the NPF got 26 seats, NDPP 18, BJP 12, NPP 2, JDU 1 and Independent 1.
- After failing to win even a single seat in the last state assembly elections in 2018, Congress is working hard to restore its former grandeur in Nagaland. Congress, NPF and NPP hope to benefit significantly from the 40:20 seats shared between NDPP-BJP.
