Mon, 25 May (MTNews): In a shocking incident that has sent shockwaves across the region, Ahoa Konyak, the Chairman of the Action Committee of Tizit Area Students’ Union (TASU) was brutally hacked to death by suspected drug peddlers. The tragic incident took place in the early morning hours at Phantom colony in Namsa Tizit, under Mon district.
According to reports, the Tizit Area Students Union had received information about the presence of drug peddlers in Phantom colony. Acting on the information, a team of three TASU officials embarked on a raid of the location. However, as they reached the spot, they were ambushed by a person identified as Menshan Konyak, who attacked them with a Naga machete. Regrettably, the attack resulted in the untimely demise of Ahoa Konyak.
News of the gruesome incident quickly spread, and an enraged mob reportedly took matters into their own hands by setting fire to the house of the accused. The suspect, Menshan Konyak, subsequently surrendered himself and is currently in police custody at Namsa Police Station.
Meanwhile, the body of the deceased was transferred to the Primary Health Center in Namsa for further procedures.
In light of this tragic loss, the Tizit Area Students’ Union has declared an immediate shutdown until 26 May as a mark of respect and to mourn the untimely death of their esteemed Chairman, Ahoa Konyak.
Rajya Sabha MP Phangnon Konyak condoles; urges peace
Following the incident, the Rajya Sabha MP Phangnon Konyak expressed her condolences and condemned the unfortunate incident through a tweet.
“The unfortunate incident in Tizit where a student leader involved in the collective fight against drugs lost his life is strongly condemned for which the perpetrators must be awarded stringent punishment as per the provisions of the law,” the tweet read.
She also appealed to the citizens of Tizit to maintain peace and abstain from violence, emphasizing that violence would only worsen the situation.
“I call upon the concerned authorities to ensure peace, instill confidence in the public and above all, justice. Prayers for the departed soul to rest in peace,” she added.
NSF condemns murder; demands punishment for the culprit
The Naga Students’ Federation (NSF) expressed deep anguish at the gruesome murder of Ahoa Konyak and strongly denounced the inhumane act, which took the life of a student leader while he was on official duty to combat the menace of drug trafficking in the area.
The Federation demanded that the perpetrator be given befitting punishment, and urged the concerned authorities to take immediate and effective measures to curb the inflow of drugs and other illegal substances that are corroding the morale of the youth and the Naga society as a whole.
The NSF further extended its deepest condolences to the bereaved family members of the deceased leader, recognizing the immense loss they have suffered. The NSF also stated that it stands in solidarity with the Tizit Area Students’ Union, acknowledging their “noble crusade against social antagonism and other anti-social elements.”
