Kohima, 2 December (MTNews): Nagaland’s Health & Family Welfare Minister P Paiwang Konyak inaugurated the Blood Component Separation Centre, TB Culture & Drug Susceptibility Testing Laboratory, and Trauma Centre at Naga Hospital Authority Kohima (NHAK) today. Speaking on the occasion, the Minister stated that these facilities will provide a multi-specialty approach to trauma victims, contributing to the fight against reducing the mortality and disability rates among victims, and also promoting awareness, preparedness, and response to such incidents.
Paiwang highlighted that NHAK’s Blood Centre is the first government hospital in the state to be licensed for blood component separation. He mentioned that the Culture & Drug Susceptibility Lab will enable the detection of not only Multi-Drug Resistant cases but also Extensively Drug Resistant Tuberculosis cases in Nagaland. The Minister called on the medical fraternity to ensure the application of the Detect, Treat, Build, and Prevent strategy to achieve a TB-free Nagaland.
Paiwang further emphasized that trauma is the neglected disease of modern developing nations. He pointed out that Trauma Centers have emerged from the realization that traumatic injury is a disease requiring experienced multidisciplinary treatment and specialized resources. NHAK, with a bed capacity of 350 and Referral Status, has been selected as a Level II Trauma Centre. The Minister informed that NHAK will now provide definitive care for severe trauma victims, with emergency physicians, surgeons, orthopedicians, and anesthetists already stationed at the Centre.
The Minister expressed hope that through these facilities, the Medical Department will make significant improvements in providing trauma and emergency medical services in a coordinated manner.
