Delhi Police has launched an investigation after an alleged video surfaced on social media, purportedly showing Union Home Minister Amit Shah making statements suggesting the BJP’s intention to revoke reservation provisions for Scheduled Castes (SCs), Scheduled Tribes (STs), and Other Backward Classes (OBCs). The development comes after the police received two complaints—one from the BJP and another from the Ministry of Home Affairs (MHA)—prompting the registration of an FIR on Sunday.
In response to the ongoing investigation, Delhi Police has summoned approximately 16 leaders, including Telangana Chief Minister Revanth Reddy, from seven states, according to IANS. The special cell of Delhi Police has dispatched teams to Rajasthan, Jharkhand, Nagaland, Uttar Pradesh, Haryana, and Madhya Pradesh to delve into the matter further.
Confirming the developments, NPCC President Supongmeren Jamir disclosed to Mokokchung Times that the police have met him today, 30 April, and affirmed their willingness to cooperate with the investigation. However, Jamir refrained from making any conclusive statements regarding the video, stating that it was “too early” to comment, and assured that an investigation would proceed shortly.
Meanwhile, another source close to NPCC acknowledged that the case is against the NPCC Minority Cell account on X. However, since it is an ongoing investigation, they preferred not to comment further on the matter.
According to IANS, along with other leaders, one leader from Nagaland has been summoned to appear before police with their mobile phones to which Jamir confirmed.
The case has been registered under Sections 153, 153A, 465, 469, and 171G of the Indian Penal Code (IPC) and section 66C of the Information Technology (IT) Act.
IANS reported that on Monday, Revanth Reddy, along with four Telangana Pradesh Congress Committee (TPCC) members, was summoned to appear before the police on May 1. It added that a Samajwadi Party Lok Sabha candidate in Uttar Pradesh and two Congress leaders in Rajasthan and Nagaland have also been asked to appear before the police with their mobile phones.
The FIR, obtained by IANS, revealed that the Ministry of Home Affairs (MHA) lodged a complaint, citing the circulation of “doctored videos” by users on Facebook and Twitter.
According to the FIR, the MHA expressed concerns that these videos, which appear to be manipulated, are disseminating false information with the intent to sow discord among communities, potentially jeopardizing public tranquility and order. The ministry urged authorities to initiate legal proceedings in accordance with the law.
Meanwhile, PTI reported that two more persons, political functionaries from the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) and the Congress party, were arrested on April 30 in Gujarat. This follows the arrest of Reetam Singh, a lawyer at the Gauhati High Court currently working as the Congress’ Assam war room coordinator a day ago.
