The Chakhroma Public Organisation (CPO) and Western Sümi Hoho (WSH) have issued a strong condemnation over the recent discovery of a bulk stock of rotten chicken at a poultry godown in New Market, Dimapur, during a municipal inspection.
In a joint statement, the two organisations described the incident as “shocking” and alleged that it was not an isolated case but part of a recurring malpractice that appeared to be an organised racket. They recalled that in a similar instance earlier, rotten poultry stock had also been uncovered but without any transparency on the outcome or action against the culprits. “Such lack of accountability emboldens unscrupulous traders to continue endangering innocent consumers,” the organizations said.
Highlighting the grave threat to public health, the statement warned that families and individuals may already have been unknowingly exposed to contaminated poultry products, putting them at risk of serious illnesses and long-term consequences.
“This is a direct assault on the well-being of the people of Dimapur and Nagaland at large,” it read.
The organizations appreciated Ward-19 Councilor Kili N Sumi and her team for their vigilance and timely inspection that led to the exposure of the malpractice. At the same time, they cautioned that “mere seizure and sealing of godowns will not suffice,” demanding stringent and exemplary action.
Their demands included the immediate cancellation of trade licenses of those involved, along with a permanent ban on such individuals from conducting any business in Dimapur in particular and Nagaland in general.
Calling for swift and transparent action, the CPO and WSH urged the Law Enforcement Agency, District Administration, and the Dimapur Municipal Council to “act with utmost seriousness to protect the health and rights of the people.”
