In a thrilling clash at the ongoing 25th NSF Martyrs’ Memorial Trophy, Ward-19 Kohima registered a hard-fought 2-1 victory over PLLA Manipur to book their spot in the pre-quarterfinals at IG Stadium on Friday.
The Kohima side struck early when Bikash netted the opener in the 6th minute. Their lead was doubled in the 40th minute through Kakhevi Assumi, giving Ward-19 a solid advantage before halftime.
PLLA Manipur fought back bravely and finally pulled one back in stoppage time when Hemgoulal converted in the 90+5th minute. However, it was too late to deny Ward-19 Kohima the win.
Laba Jr of Ward-19 Kohima was adjudged Player of the Match, receiving the award from Vizhoto Hibo (NPS), Commandant, 4th NAP Thizama.
With this victory, Ward-19 Kohima will now face Sechü Zubza in the pre-quarterfinals on October 7. In the same round, Michazou FC, who advanced via walkover, will play Red Scars FC after Sadar FC Academy withdrew from the tournament, citing their focus on the upcoming AIFF Youth League.
