Speaker Longkumer calls CPA conference a moment of pride as State hosts event after 18 years

Deputy Chairman of the Rajya Sabha, Harivansh, on Monday lauded Nagaland’s cultural diversity and its people’s deep connection with nature, saying that traditional practices across the State reflect a “symbiotic relationship between community and environment.”

Harivansh lauds Nagaland’s harmony, urges eco-friendly growth
Addressing the inaugural session of the 22nd Commonwealth Parliamentary Association (CPA) India Region Zone–III Conference in Kohima, Harivansh noted that the North East, though home to only 4 percent of India’s population and 8 percent of its area, has immense potential to become an “economically vibrant hub for trade and connectivity.”

“With the Centre’s commitment to allocate 10 percent of the national budget to the North East, the region is poised to emerge as a key stakeholder in India’s growth story,” he said. “The North East will not just benefit from this process-it will drive it, creating jobs and opportunities through inclusive governance.”

He urged legislators to adopt policies that enable growth while safeguarding traditional wisdom and ecological balance. “Every community and tribe here has unique practices that harmonize livelihood and environment. With 650 indigenous species of medicinal and aromatic plants and 46 species of bamboo, Nagaland’s ecological wealth is also an economic opportunity,” he said.

The Deputy Chairman commended ongoing efforts by State governments and the Ministry of Development of North Eastern Region (DoNER) in promoting organic products and local handlooms.

“Nagaland’s coffee is already gaining international reputation,” he remarked, expressing hope that the State’s chillies and handwoven shawls would soon achieve wider recognition in domestic and global markets.

In his welcome address, Nagaland Legislative Assembly Speaker Sharingain Longkumer expressed appreciation to parliamentarians and delegates from across the North East for attending the two-day conference. He described Nagaland as a “land of vibrant valleys and resilient people,” where over two million citizens across diverse tribes uphold the values of unity and peace.

“With its distinctive identity, rich heritage, and democratic spirit, Nagaland stands as a shining example of unity in diversity,” Longkumer said. “It is a privilege to host the CPA India Region Zone–III Conference again after eighteen years — a moment of pride that rekindles the spirit of regional cooperation and parliamentary dialogue.”

Lok Sabha Speaker Om Birla formally inaugurated a monolith to commemorate the conference at the Nagaland Legislative Assembly complex. Various departments of the State government also set up exhibition stalls showcasing flagship initiatives, developmental achievements, and innovations in governance, offering delegates insights into Nagaland’s progress and public service efforts.

The inaugural session concluded with a prayer by State Chaplain Rev. Izieteilung Terieng and a vote of thanks delivered by Parliamentary Affairs Minister KG Kenye.
