World Soil Day 2025 was observed on December 5 through a joint celebration organised by the District Soil Conservation Office (DSCO) Mokokchung and Krishi Vigyan Kendra (KVK) Mokokchung at the DSCO Conference Hall, with farmers from five villages participating.

The programme was led by Ruokuosietuo, District Soil Conservation Officer, who welcomed participants and highlighted the significance of World Soil Day, noting that soil is the basis of all life and that the day holds special importance for both farmers and concerned departments.
Delivering the keynote address, Dr. Keviletsu Khate, Senior Scientist and Head of KVK Mokokchung, discussed agricultural practices in the district that degrade soil quality. Referring to this year’s theme, Healthy Soils for Healthy Cities, he encouraged farmers to adopt practices that improve soil health and advised against the use of common salt, weedicides, and pesticides.
Videos from the “Soil in a Minute” contest, including One Handful of Hope and Healthy Soils, Healthy Cities, were screened for better understanding of the theme. Soil Health Cards for five villages were also distributed. The inaugural session concluded with a vote of thanks by Imtisenla, ACTO Agronomy, KVK Mokokchung.
Technical sessions followed, with Imtilemla, ACTO Soil Conservation, presenting on the importance of soil and water conservation in improving degraded soils, and T. Amongla, Soil Conservation Assistant, speaking on soil testing and soil fertility management.
The programme concluded with the distribution of bio-enriched organic manure to participating farmers. A total of 39 participants attended the event.
