The Kuki Tribal Union (KTU/NSCN) has issued a clarification regarding an incident that occurred in Chassad village on the night of February 10, refuting circulating rumours that alleged an attempted attack by a Tangkhul Naga women’s group and the movement of Kuki militants with Indian security forces.
In a statement, the organisation said reports claiming that a Tangkhul Naga women’s team had attempted to torch or burn down Chassad village were “incorrect.” It also denied allegations that Indian security personnel were transporting Kuki militants from across the Myanmar border to nearby areas.
According to the KTU/NSCN, the Tangkhul Naga women had instead rushed to the area to stop and check security forces and to prevent the possible movement of militants into their region, following two recent incidents reported in neighbouring localities. The organisation said the women’s actions were intended to maintain peace and stability but were later misunderstood.
The Union further appealed to the public not to circulate a video related to the incident, stating that its continued sharing could lead to confusion and tension among communities. It urged individuals who had received the footage to delete it and discourage others from spreading unverified information.
Amid what it described as a “war-like situation” in the area, the KTU/NSCN said it would continue efforts to help stabilise the situation and promote peace and harmony among neighbouring communities.
The statement was issued by KTU/NSCN Secretary L Khongsai.
