The Churches Colony Council (CCC) has taken note of the rejoinder issued by the Dimapur Naga Students’ Union (DNSU) regarding the recent forceful closure of a business establishment within Churches Colony.
In its response, the Council said it “fully recognizes and respects the importance of safeguarding indigenous rights and addressing any genuine concern relating to fraudulent indigenous certification, unlawful land procurement, business malpractice or exploitation of the public.”
It added that no responsible institution or citizen can remain indifferent to such issues.
However, the Council expressed concern over what it described as an attempt by DNSU to shift focus from the core issue raised. It said the central concern was “the dangerous normalization of unilateral enforcement, coercive action, intimidation and forceful closure of establishments by organizations that possess no lawful enforcement authority.”
The CCC stated that while raising concerns is a democratic right, the issue lies in whether any organisation can assume powers of investigation, adjudication and enforcement outside legal procedures. It said, “public legitimacy cannot substitute legal authority.”

The Council warned that if groups begin independently deciding punitive actions, “then the very foundation of public order and lawful governance will collapse.”
Rejecting allegations made in the DNSU rejoinder, the CCC said questioning methods does not amount to defending wrongdoing. It clarified that it “neither defended nor intends to defend any individual, business establishment or alleged malpractice,” and insisted that competent authorities must investigate matters through lawful channels.
Citing recent administrative action on indigenous certificate issues, the Council said it demonstrates that grievances can be addressed through due process. It termed justification of forceful action based on public sentiment as a dangerous precedent.
The CCC also objected to remarks accusing critics of shielding malpractice, stating that institutions must be judged by restraint and adherence to law.
Reiterating its position, the Council said no organisation is above due process, and “forceful closure of establishments, intimidation and unilateral enforcement actions are unlawful and unacceptable.”
The statement concluded that peace, order and justice can only be maintained within constitutional boundaries, urging civil society organisations to exercise restraint and responsibility.
