State Commissioner for Persons with Disabilities Tongpang L. Jamir held a discussion with Director of Census Operations, Nagaland, Dr. Kenei Miachieo, IFS, and Deputy Director Imkongnungsang on ensuring the inclusion and accurate identification of persons with disabilities (PwDs) in the upcoming Census.
The discussion focused on ensuring that all 21 types of disabilities are covered and that no person with disability is excluded from the enumeration process. The officials stressed the need for a comprehensive approach to identify PwDs across Nagaland and accurately record their information.
A key focus was the training and sensitisation of enumerators. It was emphasised that enumerators should understand the different types of disabilities and identify persons with disabilities correctly and sensitively during enumeration.
Jamir highlighted that accurate disability data is essential for effective planning, policy formulation, resource allocation and implementation of government schemes and programmes.
Miachieo also stressed the importance of sensitising enumerators and conducting the Census with “sensitivity, dignity and respect” for the rights of persons with disabilities.
The officials further discussed coordination between the Census Operations office and the State Commission for Persons with Disabilities on disability identification and enumeration.
The meeting reaffirmed their commitment to ensuring that every person with disability is “counted, recognized and appropriately represented” in Census data.
