A Central Post Disaster Needs Assessment (PDNA) team from the Ministry of Home Affairs (MHA) and National Disaster Management Authority (NDMA) visited Mokokchung, Longleng and Tuensang districts on October 6 and 7 as part of the ongoing assessment of monsoon-related damages in Nagaland.
In Mokokchung, the team held a meeting with officials of various line departments at the Deputy Commissioner’s Conference Hall on October 7. The Mokokchung District Disaster Management Authority (DDMA) presented a video documenting the damage caused by the recent monsoon, while departments submitted their compiled reports on damage and losses.

Lead Consultant and Coordinator, NDMA, Shashank Mishra, emphasised the need for proper documentation of the extent and severity of damage to facilitate recovery and reconstruction.
He urged officials to ensure that all actual damage was recorded accurately for assessment.
The meeting was followed by discussions between the sector experts and concerned departments. The team later visited Penli Ward in Mokokchung, where two persons lost their lives in a landslide on July 29.
In Longleng, the team held a meeting with line departments under the District Disaster Management Authority at the DPDB Hall on October 7. The PWD (R&B) and Agriculture and Allied departments presented assessments of damage to roads and agricultural fields, while representatives of civil society organisations highlighted difficulties faced by the district.
The team advised departments to ensure that actual damages and losses were properly documented to facilitate accurate assessment and post-disaster planning.
In Tuensang, the Central PDNA team visited on October 6 and interacted with line departments at the Deputy Commissioner’s Conference Hall. Deputy Commissioner Lithrongla Tongpi Rutsa highlighted the damage caused by incessant rainfall in the district and submitted detailed reports to the team.
The team also visited a landslide-affected area at IOC, Post Office Ward, Tuensang town, to assess the ground situation.
The visiting team comprised sector experts and consultants from NDMA, the National Institute of Disaster Management (NIDM) and Central Building Research Institute (CBRI), Roorkee, along with an official from the Nagaland State Disaster Management Authority (NSDMA).
The ongoing PDNA is aimed at compiling and assessing disaster-related damage and losses to support post-disaster recovery, reconstruction and planning in the affected areas.
