In a discovery echoing the stone works of the 8th and 9th centuries AD from the Gupta and Pala periods, two ancient sculptures were unearthed in Kolalian village, Mizoram’s Mamit district, near Assam’s Barak Valley.

According to a Times of India report, Dr Ganesh Nandi, Associate Professor at the Department of Visual Arts, Assam University, Silchar, made the accidental discovery along with an assistant professor and research assistant, Dr Binoy Paul, estimating the artifacts to be 1,500 years old.

Hidden in the dense forests of Kolalian village in the southwestern part of Mizoram, these sculptures offer a unique glimpse into the region’s untapped cultural heritage, influenced by Pala and Gupta styles. Dr Nandi, a reputable sculptor, emphasized the historical significance, stating that the archaeological find indicates a rich history dating back at least 15 centuries in the plains and mountains of Mizoram, adjacent to southern Assam areas.

Describing the art forms, Dr Nandi highlighted strong similarities with structures from the Gupta and Pala periods (between 750 and 1200 CE). The TOI report notes the discovery includes two sculptures: a ‘relief’ resembling a carved Buddha into the hills and a ‘free-standing’ statue resembling Parvati, a Hindu goddess.

According to local information mentioned in the TOI report, residents of Kolalian village have been worshipping these stone statues as Hindu deities for generations, conducting pujas and rituals. Despite the destruction of many other sculptures, local efforts are underway to preserve the remaining artifacts, underscoring the cultural significance of this historic find.
