An awareness programme on Rainwater Harvesting and Water Conservation was organised at DBs Hall, Atoizu, on Monday under the nationwide Jal Sanchay Jan Bhagidari (JSJB) campaign, themed “Catch the Rain”. The initiative sought to raise public awareness about water conservation and encourage greater community participation in safeguarding water resources.
The programme was chaired by Inali Yesca, Councillor, Atoizu Town Council, who emphasised that water conservation is a shared responsibility requiring the active involvement of every section of society. The programme began with an invocation by Ghunato Achumi, Youth Pastor, SBAK Nito Mount.
Welcoming the gathering, Ivuka Katty, Deputy Chairman, Atoizu Town Council, underscored the importance of public awareness and collective efforts in promoting rainwater harvesting as a practical means of addressing water scarcity.
The keynote address was delivered by Er. Liza Sumi, Junior Engineer, Water Resources Department, Zunheboto, who spoke on the growing need to conserve water through sustainable practices. She explained the principles and methods of rainwater harvesting, highlighting its role in enhancing water security while encouraging households and institutions to adopt simple, effective conservation measures.
An interactive session followed, during which participants sought clarifications on various aspects of rainwater harvesting and shared their experiences of local water-related issues. The discussion enabled the exchange of practical ideas and reinforced the importance of community participation in conserving water resources.
In his concluding remarks, Dr Samuel Akho Konyak P, Extra Assistant Commissioner, Atoizu, called upon participants to put the knowledge gained into practice and to spread awareness within their churches, organisations and families so that the message of water conservation reaches every household.
The programme concluded with a benediction pronounced by Tozheli Awomi, President, Sumi Totimi Loka (STL).
