District Magistrate and Deputy Commissioner of Mokokchung, Thsuvisie Phoji, has informed that, consequent upon the announcement of the schedules for the General Election to the Lok Sabha 2024, the Model Code of Conduct (MCC) comes into effect immediately. All provisions of the MCC will be applicable to the whole district with regard to all candidates, political parties, the State Government, and Union Government, it was informed.
The Election Commission of India announced on 16 March 2024 that the elections to the 18th Lok Sabha 2024 will be held on 19 April 2024 for the lone Nagaland parliamentary constituency seat.
Further, in accordance with the Election Commission of India’s instructions, the Deputy Commissioner of Mokokchung has invoked section 144Cr.PC, 1973, banning the carrying of licensed arms and mandating all arms license holders under Mokokchung district to deposit their arms license along with weapons at the nearest police station as per the address given in the license on or before 30 March 2024. The respective Officers In-charge of the police stations shall furnish a detailed report on such deposit and seizure.
Failure to submit the arms license and weapon within the stipulated time shall be liable to penal action as per the relevant section of the law, it was informed. This order will remain in force till the declaration of the result of the election.
In another order, the Deputy Commissioner and District Magistrate, Mokokchung, also instructed the enforcement of the Model Code of Conduct with immediate effect, and he directed all concerned, especially those villages/inhabitants residing in the border areas of Nagaland and Assam, that the carrying of any firearms, including air-guns, shall remain restricted in Mokokchung district with immediate effect till the declaration of the election result.
Failure to adhere to the above directive shall be liable to penal action as per the relevant section of the law, the order added.
