NH Zhetovi Yepthomi, the founder and first president of Eastern Sumi Hoho passed away today at CIHSR Hospital, 10 July, 2024 after prolonged illness. Yepthomi, who is from Nitoi Village, is known for his impeccable political career and his significant role in uniting and empowering the Sumi Naga community.

Yepthomi  worked as a member of the Tuensang District Regional Council from 1964-68 and served as the MLA in the 2nd NLA from 1969-75. He was elected as the Minister of Animal Husbandry in 1975 to the 3rd Nagaland Legislative Assembly.

In 1977, Yepthomi contested election from the ticket of the Indian National Congress and in 1982 as an independent candidate. However, in 1987, he detached himself from contesting any more elections but kept himself actively involved in politics for the upliftment of his people.

Sema also worked as the President of Kiphire District Congress Committee from 1996-99 and later as an Executive Member of the Nagaland Pradesh Congress Committee. In 2009, he served as an Advisory Board Member of the Kiphire Town Council.

Organizations condole
ENPO: The Eastern Nagaland Peoples’ Organization (ENPO) extended their heartfelt condolences on the passing of their beloved and tall leader. Commending his contributions to the community and his unwavering dedication to public service for the people of Eastern Nagaland in particular and the Nagas in general, the ENPO said, Sema will forever be remembered with deep respect and admiration.

“As a member of the Tuensang Regional Council from 1964 to 1968, a Member of the Nagaland Legislative Assembly in 1969 and 1974, and a Minister in 1975, Late Zhetovi Sema’s legacy is etched into the fabric of Eastern Nagaland’s history,” added the ENPO.

ENSSU: The Eastern Nagaland Sumi Students’ Union (ENSSU) expressed sadness over the demise. Calling him a visionary Naga leader, the ENSSU highlighted all the achievements in his life stating that his tireless efforts and contributions will never be forgotten.

Sumi Discussion Forum: The Sumi Discussion Forum called Yepthomi a legendary leader and lauded his achievements while adding that his legacy will be deeply missed. “The Sumi tribe has lost a great soul, and his void will be difficult to fill,” the forum stated.
