Mokokchung, October 5 (MTNews): The Central Nagaland Tribes Council (CNTC) has on Wednesday demanded to the state government to implement the Register of Indigenous Inhabitants of Nagaland (RIIN) and that the policy on backward quota be reviewed.

Central Nagaland Tribes Council (CNTC), which comprises of Ao, Sumi and Lotha tribes, in a press release through its Media Cell has expressed discontent that the state government despite setting up various committees and report being submitted by the committees and approved by the cabinet has not implemented any of these acts or policies in the state.  CNTC said that the committees were just a “mere eye wash and lip service to the people.”

CNTC stated that, when the commission on RIIN has held a series of consultations with tribal organizations, the civil society and NGOs, and have submitted its report to the state government, the government has to act upon the report of the committee.  Wondering why the government – “those at the helm,” was not introducing the act which was started by them, CNTC demanded that RIIN be implemented in the state as early as possible.

CNTC also demanded that the policy on backward quota be reviewed as per the guidelines, saying there were some loopholes in the guidelines. CNTC said that, under the backward quota guideline, the government is to review the policy every 10 years but it has not been carried out. “Since its implementation in 1977, it has undergone several changes but in reality the state government failed to review the policy as per the guidelines,” CNTC said.

CNTC went on to say that a High Powered Committee on backward quota has also been set up but its report was yet to be implemented whereas the present government’s tenure is going to end soon. “Therefore, the state government should come out with proper guidelines as early as possible,” CNTC stated.

Further, CNTC also pressed for early completion of the Foothill Road. The council said that the ‘People’s Road’ was not given importance by the government due to ‘unjustified development’ taking place.  “There is unequal distribution of funds and schemes and some funds meant for these areas have been diverted to those in power,” CNTC alleged. CNTC also mentioned that it has also resolved to extend unflinching support to Nagaland Foothill Road Co-ordination Committee for early completion of the foothill road.
