The Indian Premier League (IPL) 2025 has been suspended due to escalating military tensions between India and Pakistan. The decision was announced by the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) on Friday following an emergency meeting of the IPL Governing Council.
“The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) has decided to suspend the remainder of the ongoing TATA IPL 2025 with immediate effect for one week. Further updates regarding the new schedule and venues of the tournament will be announced in due course after a comprehensive assessment of the situation in consultation with relevant authorities and stakeholders,” a BCCI media advisory stated.
“The decision was taken by the IPL Governing Council after due consultation with all key stakeholders following the representations from most of the franchisees, who conveyed the concern and sentiments of their players, and also the views of the broadcaster, sponsors and fans; while the BCCI reposes full faith in the strength and preparedness of our armed forces, the Board considered it prudent to act in the collective interest of all stakeholders,” the statement further added.
The move follows rising security concerns, particularly from foreign players, after reports of artillery exchanges near the India-Pakistan border. According to Sportstar, the BCCI is arranging chartered flights to ensure the safe return of overseas players and support staff.
Australian players have reportedly been advised to return home by Saturday, with franchises working closely with the BCCI and relevant authorities to ensure smooth and secure departures.
Meanwhile, the Punjab Kings vs Delhi Capitals match in Dharamsala on Thursday was called off midway due to a “significant technical failure.” The BCCI later facilitated the safe departure of both teams under heavy security.
As of now, 58 matches have been completed this season, including the abandoned fixture. Only 12 league-stage games remain, which were to be played across multiple venues including Lucknow, Hyderabad, Ahmedabad, Delhi, Chennai, Bengaluru, Mumbai, and Jaipur. The playoffs were originally scheduled for Hyderabad and Kolkata. The BCCI has not yet provided a timeline for when or how the tournament will resume.
While there is no official word on when IPL 2025 will resume, it is expected that the BCCI will move quickly to explore options, especially given the tight calendar for players. The BCCI could either shift the remainder of IPL 2025 to a foreign country, as it has done in the past, or wait for a 2–3 week window in the coming months to complete the tournament.
