The Kohima District Legal Services Authority (KDLSA), in collaboration with Kohima Science College, Jotsoma, organised a legal awareness programme on 18 April at the Science College Auditorium, Jotsoma. Around 400 students and faculty members attended the event along with 10 panel lawyers and seven para legal volunteers.

The programme was chaired by Kekhriengunuo Catherine, Panel Lawyer, KDLSA. Wonchano Humstoe delivered a presentation and acknowledged the dignitaries and resource persons present.
Welcoming the gathering, Dr. Temjenwabang, Principal of Kohima Science College, appreciated the efforts of the Legal Aid Clinic and highlighted the importance of legal services for students and faculty members. He urged everyone to actively utilise these services. Referring to challenges such as climate change and cyber crime, he stressed the need for greater legal awareness to protect individuals from exploitation and victimisation.
Delivering the keynote address, Neiko Akami, Member Secretary of the Nagaland State Legal Services Authority, said “no citizen should be left behind” in access to justice. He noted that legal aid services are available to Scheduled Castes, Scheduled Tribes, women, and children. He added that legal services are extended to inmates in 12 jails across Nagaland. He also highlighted National Lok Adalats and victim compensation schemes, stating that Rs 32 lakh was disbursed to victims in 2025.
The first session on “Rights, Duties and Responsibilities of Citizens” was delivered by Mezivolu T. Therieh, NJS, Principal District and Sessions Judge and Chairperson, KDLSA. She stressed equality, dignity, responsible freedom of speech, and prevention of discrimination and harassment.
The second session on cyber crimes was delivered by Gurpreet Kaur, IPS, Officer-in-Charge of North Police Station, Kohima. She warned against common online frauds and advised prompt reporting through helpline 1930 and the official cybercrime portal.
