Manipur Cabinet declares World Kuki-Zo Intellectual Council (WKZIC) an unlawful org under UAPA
Mokokchung, 31 October (MTNews): Several police commandos in Manipur were ambushed on Tuesday evening by suspected insurgents, further exacerbating the already tense situation in the region. This incident, according to Live Mint, occurred mere hours after Moreh SDPO Chingtham Anand was killed in a brutal ambush by suspected tribal militants in the Tengnoupal district.
During the ambush, three Manipur Police officials were injured which took place around 3 pm in Sinam village as they were en route to Moreh, reported Hindustan Times. These officials had been reportedly dispatched after the Manipur Cabinet convened an emergency meeting on Tuesday morning and decided to instruct security forces to launch a joint operation in Moreh and its surrounding areas to apprehend those responsible for the tragic killing of Anand earlier in the day.
Chingtham Anand Kumar, the Moreh SDPO, sustained injuries earlier in the day when insurgents opened fire on police officials inspecting a newly constructed helipad. Regrettably, Anand succumbed to his injuries after being transported to a primary health center in Moreh.
In a further development, the Manipur Cabinet has declared the World Kuki-Zo Intellectual Council (WKZIC) an unlawful organization under Section 3 of the Unlawful Activities (Prevention) Act, 1967. This move was announced during the emergency meeting held on October 31, 2023.
The Cabinet also underscored the need to continue the joint operation in Moreh and its adjacent areas until the culprits responsible for these crimes are brought to justice. It was noted that both sides involved in the ongoing ethnic conflict had been exercising restraint, and peace had been maintained for the past one-and-a-half to two months.
