The first semifinal match of the MDFA Trophy 2024 played at Imkongmeren Sports Complex saw Konyak Students’ Union Mokokchung (KSUM) edge out Team Gilgal in a closely contested 2-1 victory. KSUM wasted no time in getting on the scoresheet, with David Konyak giving them the lead in just the second minute. The early goal fired up the dark horses of the tournament, and they dominated the opening stages, playing with noticeable intensity and motivation.

Konyak Students’ Union Mokokchung, in maroon, secured their place in the final of the MDFA Trophy 2024 after edging out Team Gilgal 2-1 in the first semifinal match on Saturday, October 26.

Team Gilgal, however, responded well, twice hitting the crossbar in the first half as they searched for an equalizer. But KSUM extended their lead in the 25th minute when Alei Konyak scored a spectacular goal from outside the box following a failed corner clearance. This gave KSUM a 2-0 cushion. Yet, just six minutes later, Ato Chopi brought Team Gilgal back into the game, scoring to reduce the deficit to 2-1, setting up an exciting second half.

Despite dominating possession and applying constant pressure, Team Gilgal’s luck did not improve as they struck the woodwork for the third time in the second half. KSUM defended resiliently, managing to absorb the pressure and deny Gilgal further opportunities. The physical contest saw five yellow cards, three to KSUM and two to Team Gilgal, highlighting the intensity on the field.

The final minutes of the match were tense, with Team Gilgal pushing hard for an equalizer. An additional five minutes of injury time added to the drama, but KSUM held on to secure their place in the final. They will now face the winner of the second semifinal between Telongjem FC and Super Seniors FC.

KSUM’s gritty performance was matched by their tenacity in chasing every loose ball and winning the critical 50/50 challenges and ability to maintain composure under pressure. This will be KSUM’s first appearance in the finals of any MDFA Trophy.

Telongjem FC routs Eastern Wings to secure a semi-final spot
Telongjem FC displayed their dominance in the fourth and final quarter-final match against Eastern Wing at the Imkongmeren Sports Complex, delivering a one-sided 6-0 victory with a flurry of goals scored in the last 10 minutes of the game. The defending champions, chasing their fourth consecutive MDFA title, stamped their authority early on and never let up.

One of the tournament’s standout players, Japheth Kath, was the star of the match, completing a stunning hat-trick with goals in the 29th, 82nd, and during stoppage time in the 90+2 minute. His lethal finishing and relentless attacking set the tone for Telongjem’s commanding performance. Kath now has six goals to his name, so far the leading goal scorer in the tournament.

Keyi Puakleube added to the scoreline with a goal in the 31st minute, while Noklensunep found the back of the net in the 88th minute, and Menguzelie Rutsa capped off the scoring in the 90th minute, ensuring an emphatic victory.

The match was initially scheduled to be played on Friday but was postponed to Saturday morning due to inclement weather, poor visibility, and unplayable conditions.

Telongjem FC’s clinical performance from the first whistle solidifies their position as tournament favorites. Their attacking prowess and rock-solid defense make them the team to beat as they move confidently into the semifinals to face Super Seniors FC, eyeing a record fourth MDFA title in a row.
