In a first for the Artang ward, Yongkongsangla R (R Asangla) has declared her candidacy for the upcoming ULB election from Artang ward, one of the six wards reserved for women under the Mokokchung Municipal Council. She made the declaration at a press conference today at Temsuyanger Jamir’s residence in Artang ward.
Yongkongsangla R has served as an educator for 20 years and is also a recipient of the Teacher’s Award in the Sub-Division in 2015 and the State Award in 2021. She expressed her enthusiasm for serving the people and working for the good of society, emphasizing on maintaining transparency under the guidance of the ward council. She also mentioned her intention to work as a mediator between the people and the municipal council.
When asked about her agenda, she declined to provide specifics, stating that her agenda could only be achieved with the support of the people and if she were elected as their representative. She said, “I’d rather be a doer than a talker.”
Nonetheless, she shared her immediate concern. She noted that there are three private schools, one Bible college, and one government middle school in the ward, highlighting the debilitated condition of the road leading to these educational institutions, which she intends to address. She also mentioned her plans to address the needs and wants of women in the community.
She further appealed to the people to use their votes to choose the right leader who will bring positive changes to the community.
With this, candidates in all 6 wards reserved for women have now announced their candidatures. Alempang, Artang, Kumlong, Marepkong, Penli, and Sungkomen are the wards reserved for women.
Nagaland will conduct the Urban Local Bodies (ULB) elections in three Municipal Councils and 36 Town Councils on June 26. This will be the first ever municipal election in the state with 33% reservation for women.
As per the Election schedule, nominations can be filed from 7th to 11th June, while scrutiny of validly nomination papers will be carried out on June 13.
