Mokokchung, 17 April (MTNews): The Court of Chief Judicial Magistrate in Mokokchung, Nagaland, has convicted one Bishnu Sharma for cruelty and assault against his wife. Sharma, currently residing at Luyong Ward, Tuli, Mokokchung, was found guilty under various sections of the Indian Penal Code (IPC).

The case against Sharma was registered at the Women Police Station in Mokokchung on 21 August 2021. The charges framed against him included sections 498A (cruelty by husband or relative), 354 (assault or criminal force to woman with intent to outrage her modesty), 354D (stalking), 500 (defamation), and 506 (criminal intimidation) of the IPC.

Assistant Public Prosecutor of Mokokchung informed that the “evidence” commenced on 9 November 2023.

Bishnu Sharma has been sentenced to a simple imprisonment of one year and a fine of Rs 500 for the offence punishable under Section 498A IPC. Additionally, he was sentenced to a simple imprisonment of one year and a fine of Rs 500 for the offence under Section 354 IPC. For the offence under Section 506 IPC, he has been sentenced to a simple imprisonment of three months.

Section 498A IPC deals with the subject of husbands or relatives subjecting women to cruelty. Section 354 IPC pertains to assault or the use of criminal force against a woman with the intent to outrage her modesty, while Section 506 IPC deals with the punishment for criminal intimidation.
