Observed under the theme “Pain Management: An Essential Part of Palliative Care”, the programme highlighted the need to address not only the physical pain of patients but also their psychological, spiritual, social and financial concerns.

Dr. R. Alemba Jamir, Senior Specialist at IMDH Mokokchung, said hospice and palliative care extended beyond hospitals to include care at home. He described pain relief as an essential component of quality healthcare and compassionate care, adding that palliative care aimed to improve the quality of life of patients with serious illnesses and their families.

Dr. Alemwabang Aier, Medical Superintendent of IMDH Mokokchung, said palliative care was not limited to cancer patients but was also important for those suffering from kidney diseases, stroke and other conditions. He called for greater support for patients and their families and urged all health centres, medical officers, caregivers and communities to contribute to palliative care.

“When cure is less effective, palliative care becomes vital,” he said.

Dr. Maongtula Jamir, Junior Specialist at IMDH, described pain management as multidimensional and discussed pain assessment, management measures and four common types of pain.

The programme was chaired by Dr. Limanaro, District Programme Officer (UIP and RCH), Mokokchung. The Nursing Superintendent delivered the vote of thanks. Medical officers and students from the College of Nursing, IMDH Mokokchung, attended the observance.
