Kohima, 18 July (MTNews): In a tragic monsoon related incident on Monday, one person lost his life and another sustained injuries after a rain-induced landslide occurred at a construction site in Kohima district, according to an official. The unfortunate incident took place in the Meriema area while construction laborers were carrying out work at the site.

The monsoon season has wreaked havoc in Nagaland, with a total of five fatalities reported due to rockslides and drowning between June 11 and July 17, as per the available data. Additionally, hundreds of people have been adversely affected by waterlogging, and damage to numerous houses and roadblocks caused by landslides have been reported in at least 10 out of the 16 districts in the state.

The Nagaland State Disaster Management Authority (NSDMA) has disclosed that earlier this month, two individuals lost their lives and three others sustained injuries as a result of sudden rockslides in Chumoukedima district. The NSDMA data also revealed that two individuals drowned in separate incidents at Dhansipar and Lengrijan in Dimapur on July 9 and 15 respectively.

The impact of incessant rain triggered a severe landslide, leading to the cutting off of the National Highway 202 between Shamator and Kiphire districts. Additionally, on Sunday, two houses were damaged in Alahuto colony and near the Catholic Church in Zunheboto district.

The state is expected to experience continuous rainfall until Tuesday, heightening the risks of landslides, flash floods, roadblocks, and property damage. In response, the government has urged people to avoid high-risk zones and directed the state disaster response agencies and departments to remain prepared to implement life-saving measures.

The NSDMA has issued a warning to travelers, especially while crossing mountainous areas, advising them to exercise caution and be aware of the potential dangers associated with the prevailing weather conditions.

DC Mon warns of heavy rainfall, issues advisory

Meanwhile, Deputy Commissioner of Mon district, Ajit Kumar Verma has issued an advisory to the public in anticipation of heavy rainfall during the monsoon period. Citing the likelihood of waterlogging, flash floods, landslides, and rising water levels in rivers and streams due to heavy rains in the hill sector, the DC has taken precautionary measures to ensure the safety of residents.

The advisory urges the public to exercise caution and adhere to the following guidelines: Firstly, individuals are advised to avoid vulnerable areas known for landslides. Additionally, the DC has requested that people refrain from engaging in activities near riverbanks, including picnics, fishing, or other water-related activities. The rising water levels pose a significant threat during heavy rainfall, and avoiding these areas is crucial for personal safety.

Furthermore, seeking shelter under large trees is discouraged. The DC highlighted the potential danger of falling branches or uprooted trees during inclement weather conditions. It is advisable to find safe shelter away from trees, ensuring protection from any potential harm, he cautioned.

He also advised people to remain vigilant on hill roads, noting any cracks on road surfaces and slopes, and promptly report them to the authorities. Verma further directed concerned Area Administrative Officers, Village Disaster Management Authorities, Village Council Chairmen, Goan Buras and Ward Authorities to be prepared to address any emergencies caused by natural calamities during the monsoon period.
